White-tailed deer have long been hunted as game, for sport and for their commodities. In some areas where their populations are very high, they are considered a pest, and hunting is used as a method to control it.
The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), also known as the whitetail or Virginia deer, is a medium-sized deer native to the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia[2]
In North America, the species is widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains, but elsewhere, it is mostly replaced by the black tail or mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus).
The conversion of land adjacent to the northern Rockies into agriculture use and partial clear-cutting of coniferous trees (resulting in widespread deciduous vegetation) has been favorable to the white-tailed deer and has pushed its distribution to as far north as Fort St. John, British Columbia.
